5 Most Common Law Firm Marketing Mistakes

Testimonials

We have never once regretted having Nick as our marketing consultant. He is just brilliant at thinking out of the box and making us do the same. We decided very early on that we just had to trust him because we are lawyers and not so good at selling things!

Nick is enthusiastic and extremely pro active which is infectious and makes us want to excel at attracting the clients we really want.

He is now an integral and indispensable part of our team.

Julie Glynn, Partner, Glynns Solicitors.

"Since we have involved Nick in marketing there has been a transformation in our practice. Whilst previously we had plodded along for 10 years picking up all sorts of work via word of mouth and local networking , thanks to Nick we now have focus and are attracting the sort of work and clients that we want on a daily basis. Nick is innovative and proactive. He doesn't believe in putting off until tomorrow anything that can be done today. He is results oriented and we can already, after a relatively short period of time, see results"

Jenny Batchelor, Batchelor Myddelton Solicitors.

"When I started receiving Nick’s advice on pay per click advertising, I followed some of it [with a considerable degree of success] but really didn't think it was necessary to follow it all. Well, not for the 1st time, I have had to eat my words. In the last year or so I have mended my ways and now follow Nick’s advice to the letter. The statistics speak for themselves."

"In the period 19/6/10 to 18/7/10 my monthly pay per click campaign cost me £1,831.58 [that’s 735 clicks at an average of £2.49 each]. I thought that was pretty good. However, since taking on all of Nick's advice, the identical period this year saw a massive improvement in broadly identical campaigns – 1,078 clicks at an average of just £1.64 each, totalling £1,764.77."

"So not only have I saved myself over £50 every month, but I also get almost 50% more clicks! That's what I call a result – well done Nick!"

Recommended Marketing Reading For Solicitors

I read far too many marketing books for it to be healthy, and I recommend the best ones here. If you are looking for some quick fixes there are some excellent books here to give you some new ideas for marketing your legal practice. If you know of any others, please get in touch with me and let me know.

The Rise And Fall - Gerald Ratner

One of the regular problems I see preventing solicitors from some amazing success stories is the “fear factor”. It stops some solicitors trying something new which might produce fantastic results because the 'fear of failure' is too big to overcome.

If this has ever happened to you, I strongly recommend that you read Gerald Ratner’s book, 'The Rise And Fall'. The book is fantastic. Surprisingly for a man that has been hugely successful, and is again now with a multi million pound online jewellers, the point that struck me most was the number of times that he tried a new initiative and it failed, often spectacularly. The difference between Gerald Ratner and many of the solicitors that I meet is that he shrugged his shoulders and tried something else. He knew that if he failed enough times he would also succeed sometimes and this would far outweigh the cost of the failures. He was right.

He also tried new marketing methods for jewellers which had never been tried before in his sector and which caused other jewellers to look down on him and mock him. Of course he had a good laugh at their expense as his company was the largest jeweller in the UK (before his infamous remarks were publicised). This is something I always encourage my clients to do, to look outside of the legal sector and borrow/copy ideas from other businesses. This is what your competitors will do after October 2011.

The other thing that struck me was the speech he gave to the Institute of Directors in 1991 which caused his company to lose millions on the stock market overnight when he described some of his products as “crap”. It was not so much the content of his speech in relation to his products, but more the state of the economy at that time and how businesses would have to change to survive and thrive. You could change the date and read that speech now in 2010 and it will be as relevant now as it was then.

If for no other reason than to read that speech, I strongly recommend that you buy this book.

The E Myth

Providing value based services or selling time? Working on your business or in it? Chapter 3 should strike a cord as it relates to what the Technician (solicitor) wants and what he needs. They are not the same. You should find this illuminating. If you have never read this you MUST READ IT NOW! In fact I would almost say that if you are a solicitor running a practice and you are the only one or one of the decision makers, you will never be successful until you read this book, yes really!

The Book With The Wrong Title

Take hundreds of hugely successful business people, analyse their skills, personality traits and how they run their business, distill the answers to a few core principles, then publish your book so others can learn from it and understand the key rules for business success before implementing them in their own business.

This sounds like a good book doesn't it? It is. The only trouble I have with it is the name; it is very bad. However, this book is so widely quoted by successful business people that I could not let it's name stop you from seeing it (and buying it because you really should). Napoleon Hill's Think And Grow Rich. Millions of sales and first class reviews and ratings cannot be wrong.

Take A Radical Look At The Way You Do Things

Tim Ferris is a young genius, spending two out of every three months travelling, learning new skills, and enjoying himself whilst making money from his internet websites. How does this apply to solicitors? Well he teaches you some very basic skills which can radically improve your efficiency.

Are Your Legal Team Rotten Fish or Fragrant Flowers?

Whilst reading one book recently, it struck me how I have been in some solicitors' practices where morale seems very low, and where a large change in staff's attitude has hugely changed the fortunes of the firm.

If you would like ideas to turn your team into Fragrant Flowers, I highly recommend the "Fish" book here:

Blink

Although Tipping Point is perhaps Malcolm Gladwell's best known book, I found Blink to be far more enlightening and incredibly useful in better understanding why we should trust our gut feeling more. An essential took for solicitors, whether in the courtroom or when hiring new staff. This is an excellent and thought provoking read.

Improving Your Business

If you are looking for an easy read with some sound business principles from a self made millionaire, you will find Duncan Bannatynes' book to be very uplifting and it will make you think how you can apply some of his tips to your legal practice. I particularly like his model for deciding whether to build a new gym in a certain location - can it be applied to Solicitors Practices too?

Website Marketing - The Big Red Fez

If you are looking for a quick fix book that will quickly provide you with some excellent ideas to improve the performance of your website, The Big Red Fez from Seth Godin is money well spent. Click on the image to read more about it.

Push Your Legal Marketing Over The Edge

Not a pure marketing book, but an excellent read to make you challenge the way you think about business in general. If you are short of ideas, and want a book that might explain why one solicitor has a thriving and successful solicitors practice whilst his next door neighbour does not, read this book. A Practical Guide to Handling Claims Against The MIB

OK now I have to confess that this book has absolutely nothing to do with marketing a solicitors practice, but I did write it and it is my website.... On the plus side, it is still selling well and hopefully it convinces you that if I can persuade a legal publisher to publish my works then I must know something about books.
