Surviving Jackson Book Review

The tone you need to read NOW – Andrew Twambley, Amelans Solicitors & Injury Lawyers 4U

About 6 months ago I ran into Professor Regan at an event and in his usual constantly flamboyant fashion, announced to me that Jeff Zindani and he were writing a Jackson book. I feigned interest, whilst attempting to decide which pudding to order. “…..and we want you to review it “, he said’ in an off hand manner that would have suited Prince Charles ordering his chef to sort out dinner. “No problem ” I responded , whilst slobbering over the thought of sticky toffee pudding.

Anyway, some months later, I receive a parcel in the post .I eagerly opened it, thinking it was my collection of previously unreleased photos of The Clash. Unfortunately, it was a book, with an attached note from the Proff saying “remember your promise”. My first thought was “@@@@ no”‘…..then it came back to me…my rash agreement. whilst salivating over the thought of pudding.

Now, I have not read a law book cover to cover since………well, years ago when I was at college…..and I don’t like law books…..and this looked like a law book, felt like a law book, definitely was a law book. I hesitantly and splutteringly sent a thank you note, hoping I could get out of it. But I received an immediate reply saying I had 2 weeks to do the review…..@@@@!
I put off the task for a week, as if it were the garden gate that required fixing, but with D Day looming I picked it up bracing myself for pain, hoping for a call from B&Q informing me that my nails had arrived. There was to be no call, so I got stuck in.

My first surprise was that the chapters were from an assortment of gurus as well as Messer’s Regan and Zindani. It reminded me of the film Avengers Assemble with all the super heroes coming together to fight he Evil Menace . The book kicks off steadily with a mouth watering opener from Mr Zindani, wetting my palate for what was to follow. There then follows a couple of right hooks from the Professor summarising Jacko and devouring the complex mystery of proportionality. This isn’t just a bit of Jacko regurgitation, knocked out by a legal hack on a wet Wednesday, but concise de-structuring of the Jackson enigma in the Professor’s unique style, as those of who have seen him live in concert will recognise and appreciate.

There then follows 2 chapters on Costs Management……not a subject matter that would normally make my juices flow. But here with commentaries by HHJ Simon Brown QC and the irrepressible Dr Mark Friston they became pieces of sublime common sense and easy for the most easily distracted mind to comprehend.

The most fascinating and potentially painful section of the book came next with 3 left hooks on marketing strategy, told like it is by Nick Jervis. Nobody charged with developing their legal business in the New World can afford to turn their backs on this piece…….unless they wish to bury their heads like an overheated ostrich , with a sore leg. I once offered this guy a job….and he turned me down….wise move !

After picking myself up after the shock of the truth, exposed in the previous sections, I was then treated to the survival guide by Mr Zindani……who must have watched Mad Max at least 5 times. I am going to rephrase most of that and lecture my staff, pretending it’s all my own work

The book graciously slides towards its conclusion with an invaluable explanation of how to fund your business in the future , written by Mark Feeney. It’s all so different from the old days.
So, I have finished my first law book since 1979….and yes, I enjoyed it and will take good notice of its contents. Don’t buy this book with the intention of reading it one day….. you must read it now, this minute, before you next pick up your favourite gossip mag…..because if you don’t, you will be, as Private Frazer…….proclaimed in Dad’s Army….DOOMED

Marketing For Solicitors

Tim Bishop

As the owner of a small to medium-sized law firm, I have found that Samson Consulting’s Marketing4Solicitors monthly newsletter has proved absolutely invaluable throughout the last three years or so. Of all the marketing advice I’ve had over the years, this has proved by far the best value – bringing us tens of thousand of pounds of extra work every year.

One of the best tricks Nick Jervis [who owns Samson Consulting] uses, is not only to identify the kind of marketing actions a small or medium-sized business can take themselves, but he also explains why it works and most importantly then takes you through, step-by-step exactly what you need to do. As someone who is passionate about growing my business, I really look forward to receiving Nick’s excellent newsletter every month.

It’s worth pointing out that initially I was sceptical about his promises – so many marketing businesses promise the earth. But within a couple of months I was absolutely convinced he was right and I have been hooked ever since.

I recommend Nick Jervis and Samson Consulting without any hesitation whatsoever.

As usual with Nick he was super informative and helpful and gave me some very good tips for me to go forward with. He exudes positivity and makes dealing with him a pleasure. Also gave me a steer in helping two other contacts I have who may be able to use his services

Less than a year ago I asked Nick to help me grow our practice by making the telephone ring.

He’s certainly done that and much more.

The improvements are incredible and Nick has guided me through the many challenges of scaling up, not least the need for a client focused approach.

This has allowed me to start the next phase; organising the practice to ensure a better lifestyle balance for all of us, whilst we continue to grow.
