I hear this a lot and I have some good news for you. Why should you know what you are supposed to do to generate new client instructions?

You may have spent years learning your skills to qualify a solicitor, but that learning did not explain how you should run your business and how to ensure that you can generate all of the new client instructions you want and need to have a highly successful and profitable practice.

So don’t beat yourself up about the not knowing, which in my experience a lot of solicitors spend a lot of time doing each and every day. Stop that, it won’t improve or change your situation. The only way to achieve this is to do something different. Improve your learning and understanding and discover what you need to do to get from where you are now, to where you want to be.

Well, you could do what you did originally and even go back to learning and obtain a degree in marketing, but I think that might be over the odds for what you need. Also, from my own experience, what they teach at marketing school doesn’t actually give you any of the tools you need for generating client instructions. In that way it is very similar to Law School; lots of learning theory which you are unlikely ever to use, with very little practical or real learning thrown in. That’s a pity, because that is exactly what you need.

Maybe you could buy a marketing book? It might give you some ideas and inspire you for a few days, but we all know that after that initial surge of excitement, we tend to drift back to what we were doing before, and we have already established that for you, that is simply not working.
