If, however, you are more or less where you were at the beginning of 2016, you are probably wondering what happened and how are we here already. Another year in the same place.

So what are you going to do next year to change this?

Einstein is famed as saying that doing the same things over and over again and expecting different results is insanity. So what are you going to do differently in 2017?

If you weren’t able to answer ‘yes’ to being exactly where you want your law firm to be at the moment, why aren’t you there yet?

I am pretty confident that I know what it is, based on my experience of working with hundreds of law firm owners now.

It is lack of a structure, a bespoke marketing action plan to follow and this coupled with being answerable to someone else to ensure that you do what you need and have agreed to do to get you where you want to be.

It is the final part that is so crucial. It is hard running your own business and answering only to yourself. In fact, I think it is actually almost impossible. We are hard wired to answer to others from birth. First, our parents, then our teachers, then our lecturers and employers (not to mention our partners…).

Whilst we might all assume that working for yourself will simply be amazing because we reap all of the benefits of our actions, the truth is somewhat different.

I recognised this some years ago.

When I was a practising solicitor I used to make very good money for my employers because I have always had a strong work ethic and some good ideas.

So when I started my own business I wondered why it wasn’t going as well as I would have liked as quickly as I wanted it to.

I analysed all of my best former performances and realised that they all had one thing in common; I was accountable to someone else for my actions.

It was then that I instantly hired someone to make me accountable to them, and since then I haven’t looked back.

I have someone outside of my business looking in. Someone to bounce my ideas off and tell me to drop the bad ones, and someone, most importantly, to make me do what I have committed to doing. Commitment to taking action is vital. Having someone hold you accountable to your commitments is the difference that makes the difference.

One Partner Law Firm Changes Direction
